Support the Comox Valley Foodbank and Transition Society

Accepting donations at the shop starting December 4th, 2024

The Holiday Season is full of celebrations for many, but beyond the Festival of Lights, Christmas trees and Karamu feasts are many folks in our own community just trying to get by. Spread the word about how to support people in your community who may be experiencing abuse, trauma, recovery and/or poverty.

Bring a bag for the Comox Valley Transition Society or the Comox Valley Foodbank

We fully intend to blockade the whole area under the tree and front door again with non-perishables and everyday items for our community members. We will be accepting donations for the Comox Valley Food Bank as well as The Comox Valley Transition Society. If you’re coming to visit us at the shop between December 4th and 21st, don’t forget your contribution.

SMALL GESTURES HAVE BIG IMPACTS

WHAT'S NEEDED

Comox Valley Transition Society – Lilli House and Darry’s Place Housing Programs for women and their children fleeing/at risk of gender-based violence

Sandy Mac, Jeff’s mother-in-law, has craftily sewn some amazing toiletry bags again, ready to be filled with essentials: soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, hairbrushes, feminine hygiene products, razors, shampoo and conditioner, hand cream, wipes, etc.

There is always a need for formula as well as newborn diapers (size 1 & 2). Socks and underwear for women and children - all sizes are needed. Bus tickets, food gift cards (Superstore/Walmart) are always practicable as well as non-perishable food items.

WHAT'S NEEDED

Comox Valley Food Bank – helping folks from Cook Creek to Oyster River for over 30 years

  • Canned soup, beans ready to eat, vegetables, diced tomatoes, lentils
  • Pasta, rice, instant potatoes, nuts, whole grain cereal, granola bars, crackers, peanut butter
  • Cooking essentials like olive/canola oil, spices
  • Shelf stable and powdered milk
  • Toilet paper, personal hygiene products
  • Gluten free, vegan and vegetarian items welcome to accommodate allergies/dietary needs
  • Gardeners! Consider Grow a Row for next year’s crop!

The Comox Valley Transition Society (CVTS) supports women, children, and families who are experiencing or fleeing abuse, overcoming trauma, working toward or through recovery, and those who are unsheltered and/or struggling with poverty.

The CVTS opened LILLIHOUSE in 1992, an 11-bed home in the community that provides a safe, confidential space for women and their children, fleeing violence.

Darry's Place is a supportive second stage housing program for women and their children who have experienced gender-based violence or are at risk of violence. The housing is for a short-term period of up to 18 months, with a potential of extension.

The Comox Valley Food Bank (CVFB) distributes free supplementary food to people in need. As a non-profit organization committed to reducing hunger since 1983, the CVFB gathers food and cash donations to support food distribution and collection programs.

The CVFB reaches a wide range of urban and rural populations in the Comox Valley, from Oyster River in the North to Cook Creek in the South, including Hornby and Denman Island residents.

As the need for supplementary food continues to grow in the community, this is reflected by the record number of clients accessing services. The CVFB continues to strive towards producing larger quantities of items in food hampers, better quality food, fresh produce, and healthy children’s snacks.
